Which of these apps do you actually need?

Fewer than the list suggests. UK charging is fragmented across a lot of operators, but two things make it easier here than in most markets: contactless payment is widespread on rapid chargers, and one map app covers essentially everything.

A useful way to think about it is three layers. A map showing every charger regardless of operator. The network apps for the operators you actually use, which increasingly you can skip because you can just tap a card. And a route planner for journeys beyond a single charge.

Most drivers here need one map, one or two network apps, and a planner they open occasionally. If you charge at home overnight on an EV tariff, which is where the real saving is, you may open these only when you travel.

Maps and planning

Zapmap

The UK's dominant charger map and the one to install first. It covers every network, shows live availability at many sites, and carries user reports on whether a charger is actually working. Coverage of UK charging is better than any international app manages, because it is built specifically for this market. Start here.

PlugShare

The international alternative, useful mainly if you drive abroad or want a second opinion on a site's reliability. Its UK coverage is good but Zapmap is generally better, so most people here need only one of the two.

A Better Route Planner (ABRP)

Plans a long drive around charging stops rather than distance alone, factoring in speed, elevation, temperature and load. UK journeys are shorter than in Australia or the United States, so it matters less for everyday driving — but it earns its place for a Scotland run, a trip to Cornwall, or anything where the motorway services you were counting on might be busy.

Charging networks

Worth saying plainly: you can use a lot of UK rapid charging without any app at all, because contactless payment is common. Accounts still help on the networks you use often, since subscriptions and member rates reduce the per-kWh price.

bp pulse

One of the largest networks, from slow AC to ultra-rapid hubs. It runs a subscription that lowers the per-kWh rate, which is worth the arithmetic if you charge publicly more than occasionally.

InstaVolt

Rapid and ultra-rapid, contactless on every unit, no app or account needed, and a reliability reputation that makes it the network people mention first. For occasional public charging it is close to ideal.

GRIDSERVE

The Electric Forecourts and a large share of motorway service area charging. If you drive any real motorway distance you will use it, so it is worth having set up before you need it rather than in a service station car park.

Osprey

Rapid charging at retail parks, hotels and pubs, contactless throughout, and usually several units per site — which matters because one occupied charger is the most common way a journey plan falls over.

Pod Point

Mostly slower destination charging at supermarkets, plus a large share of the home charger market. Often the network you use without deciding to, because it is in the car park you were already in.

Tesla

Superchargers are extensive and reliable, and open to non-Tesla cars at a growing number of UK sites through the Tesla app. UK Superchargers use CCS, so there is no adapter involved.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account with every charging network?

No, and less so here than almost anywhere. Contactless card payment is widespread on UK rapid chargers, and some networks such as InstaVolt and Osprey are contactless throughout with no app at all. Accounts and subscriptions are worth having for the operators you use regularly, because they reduce the per-kWh rate, but for occasional charging a bank card covers you.

Which app should I install first?

Zapmap. It is built specifically for the UK, covers every network, and shows live availability and user reports on whether a charger is working. International apps cover UK adequately but Zapmap covers it better. Add network apps afterwards, only for the operators you find you actually use.

Do I need an adapter for Tesla Superchargers?

Not in the UK. Superchargers here use the CCS connector, the same one almost every modern EV sold in Britain uses, so a non-Tesla car plugs straight in. Access is managed through the Tesla app. This is a genuine difference from North America, where Tesla uses its own connector and adapters are part of the picture.

Why is public charging so much dearer than charging at home?

Two reasons stacked on each other. Public charging carries the cost of the hardware, the grid connection and the site, and rapid units are expensive to install and run. On top of that, domestic electricity is charged VAT at five per cent while public charging is charged at twenty. Together they explain why a rapid charger can cost three or four times an overnight home rate, and why an EV tariff at home is where the real saving sits.

Are these apps free?

The apps are free to download. What you pay is for the electricity, at a rate set by the network operator. Some networks sell subscriptions that lower the rate, and A Better Route Planner has a paid tier adding live vehicle data, but nothing here requires payment to use.

Do I still need these if I charge at home?

Less than you would expect. With off-street parking and an EV tariff, home charging covers most everyday driving at a fraction of public rates, and you may open a charging app only when you travel. These apps matter most for drivers without a driveway and for longer journeys.
